Tips for Proper Dental Management

Just like any industry, having good management is key to a happy workplace. A good leader helps staff adhere to precautionary measures while still ensuring patient treatment is of the highest quality.

Some individuals have natural, leader instincts, whereas others need a little training. Dentists who want to open their practice or take on more responsibilities at their current office can greatly benefit from leadership training. With honest leadership skills, dentists can inspire, motivate, and encourage staff to work efficiently. A true leader will lead by example; an authoritarian style boss cannot motivate staff.

Steps to Become a Leader Your Staff Needs

1. The first thing you need to do is to determine the goals for you and your staff. Where do you want to be in 3 years? Where does your staff see themselves in 3 years? Be aware of the ambitions within your practice. Doing so allows you and your staff to work towards those goals. As a leader, you should encourage growth and help your staff achieve what they want.

2. Take a leadership workshop. If you don’t believe you’re a natural leader, participating in courses, conferences, or workshops can greatly help. You’ll learn skills, traits, and strategies that you can bring to your office.

3. Create a trusting and positive environment. Nobody will want to work in an office where workers cannot trust each other or their manager. By creating an environment where communication is cherished and encouraged, the trust will be built.

4. Establish team goals. After knowing the individual goals within your office, spend time together to create collective goals. Each team member will play their role and contribute to accomplishing those goals. This builds a sense of comradery and enhances confidence and trust in each other.

5. Spread out tasks evenly and give tasks that allow your staff to flourish. Try to set your staff up for success by giving them the tasks they can excel at. Additionally, by knowing the goals of your staff, you can distribute tasks to push your employees a little more. By testing the boundaries of their comfort, you can help your employees grow and become more confident in new tasks.

6. Make feedback and reviews a common occurrence. At the end of each week, you can provide your staff with feedback on performance. This should be constructive feedback which encourages staff to make improvements.

7. Encourage education. Keep an eye out for workshops and seminars in your area. When something comes up, consider offering part of your staff time off to participate. This shows you care about your staff’s growth. Furthermore, you can establish group workshops yourself for all to participate in.

8. Consistently bring positivity to the office. When your staff does something good, let them know you witnessed it. Give them praise and make them feel good about their work.

9. Set high standards. Let your staff know you expect excellence. After following all the other tips, you should have trust built already. Now, make sure your staff keeps up with high standards of treatment and patient care.
